Our next screening (on Sunday, September, 13) is Fallen Angel (1945), starring Dana Andrews, Linda Darnell and Alice Faye. It was directed by Otto Preminger.
Dana Andrews had appeared as the doomed figure hung by a lynch mob in The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). His quiet dignity in that performance led to a lead role in Laura (1944), also directed by Preminger, in which he stood at the centre of a film drenched in shadow and obsession. We have shown both these classic films in the club
The next year, in Fallen Angel, Andrews played a darker role that, in fact, he did not want to take; Eric Stanton is a drifter who gets involved in things he cannot control and becomes tangled up in murder and deception. But the role demonstrated the range of roles this star could tackle.
A word for new-comers to Classic Film Club: attendance costs only £3, which is collected in a pot at the bar, so it's a good idea to bring some cash with you.
