Yet this one gets top billing and a big budget. It is a dark tale of sociopathic obsession in the tacky world of sideshows and carnivals: a new-comer becomes fixated on a mind-reading act and determines to steal it and take it up-market.

The Lost Weekend (1945), was nominated for seven Oscars and won four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Starring Ray Milland and Jane Wyman, it was directed by Billy Wilder. Some argue the impact of its depiction of alcoholism has diminished over the years, but I disagree: its unflinching honesty shocked audiences in 1945 and Milland's award-winning performance (his only Oscar) remains remarkably powerful. It is one of only three films to win both a best picture Oscar and the Grand Prix at Canne (the other two being Marty, 1955 and Parasite, 2019). THIS WEEK 6PM FOR 6.30PM SCREENING.

Our screening on August 14 (second Sunday now, remember) is a 1957 DeLuxe Colour CinemaScope film. Adapted from a 1952 novel and directed by John Huston, the film was nominated for Best Actress (Deborah Kerr) and Best adapted Screenplay. It follows the fortunes of a marine (Robert Mitchum) and a nun (Kerr) shipwrecked on a desert island during WWII and was the first pairing of Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum (they would star in four movies together). Kerr observed that Mitchum was "a far more complex person than his lazy, relaxed manner would have you believe, a man who hides many lights under many bushels." Mitchum never received formal acting lessons which, he said, "is like going to school to learn to be tall."

Bristol Griot Jam Session, open to all singers, instrumentalists and spectators. A chance to play along with Moussa Kouyate, a renowned Kora player, a kind of African harp. It's more of a collective jam than an open mic, and requires sensitivity when not to play rather than brilliance. Improvised poetry works well. The job of the Griot is to build community and that's what we do in these sessions. Audience who don't play are most welcome and we ask for £8 to help cover an honorarium to Moussa, local legend, who lives hand to mouth. Please bring a mic stand and lead if you need it. We can use the house PA basic set up. I'll be your host and on other occasions it's Emmy the Harp and/or Bryn on guitar. David Mowat trumpeter.
Sylvia Scarlett (1935) is based on a 1918 novel by Compton McKenzie (The Early Life and Adventures of Sylvia Scarlett). It was directed by George Cukor and stars Katharine Hepburn, Edmund Gwenn, Brian Aherne and Cary Grant. An embezzler has to get out of Paris quick, but his daughter insists on going with him so, to avoid detection, Sylvia wears men's clothing and becomes 'Sylvester'. Adventures ensue ... In fact Hepburn spends most of the film in men's clothes, with a love interest who is not Grant (who was not yet a star) but Aherne. The story's a genre mash-up and the gay director goes all out for a gender-bending theme that is ahead of its time - and that audiences were not ready for, but anyway ...
Chapter 4 in this exciting monthly live music series called FIRST FRIDAY LIVE by VooKoo sees the incredible...Reuben’s Daughters Playful and adventurous alternative pop where solid grooves undulate underneath a technicolor island of slide guitars. Prepare to be taken on a musical journey of psychedelic pastoral pop that feels like the first buds of spring.

Fury (1936). Based on the story, Mob Rule, by Norman Krasna, this was the first Hollywood production by German director, Fritz Lang. Said to have been Lang's favourite American film, it targets ignorance, greed, hypocrisy, bigotry and intolerance in a small town. The film can also be read as criticism of the conditions in Nazi German that Lang had just fled. But it was also a warning to America - a warning that remains relevant to our own time, nearly 90 years later. Get more background and information on the film and director here. Classic Film Club @ SouthBank First Sunday of each month (usually) 5.30 for 6.00pm screening. SouthBank Arts Cafe and Bar, Dean Lane, Southville, Bristol. Club Members FREE Guest Membership £3.
