Filmed on location in Manchester - very unusual when most police dramas were shot in a studio - it follows the investigations of Inspector Martineau (Baker) into an escaped mobster, Don Starling (Crawford), while Martineau meanwhile has his own marital problems. With its gripping story-line and intense dialogue, critics felt the film made most American gangster movies seem "weakly constructed and slow moving" and it has since become a cult classic.
