Our next film is in French (with subtitles) and stars Danielle Darriex, Charles Boyer and the Italian director Vittoria de Sica (unusually in an acting role). It was directed by the German-French master filmmaker, Max Ophüls. The Earrings of Madame de . . . (1953) is an emotional and adventurous tale of deception, opulence and tragic romance, set in Paris at the turn of the century. PLOT: To pay off some debts, an aristocratic lady sells some earrings, gifted to her by her husband, to her jeweller. She tells her husband she lost them at the opera, but when news of the search hits the newspapers, her jeweller approaches her husband and sells them back. Trouble ensues - but in a very French manner.
